Mathrubhumi is a Malayalam language daily newspaper that has its origins during the peak of India’s freedom movement. The newspaper was founded by K. P. Kesava Menon, who himself was an active volunteer in India’s freedom struggle. Mathrubhumi was founded in the year 1923 and its name translates to ‘Motherland’ in the Malayalam language. Mathrubhumi has its headquarters in Kozhikode, and the newspaper has grown to become one of the most popularly read regional language newspapers in India. On any given day, it is estimated that Mathrubhumi has more than 1.2 million copies of the newspaper in circulation on average. It is the preferred news source for millions of Malayalam speaking readers across Kerala, as well as among the Malayali communities in various other parts of India, and even abroad, most notably in the Middle East. Along with the main newspaper, Mathrubhumi publishes an assortment of magazines and supplements.
